"The lady in black spoke only," I have a message !" were the words I heard. My wife, who has excellent hearing, couldn't hear any speech either. People in the lobby during intermission didn't know the plot either, that's what they were discussing. The sound engineer at the rear, 2 rows behind me, was not adjusting gain on the mixing board. It resembled a 1930's cheap audio system. I suspect condenser microphones were utilized, and the preamp was set too low. The lead male and female vocals were the only somewhat acceptable elements during singing. However, nothing is as strong as its weakest link in any endeavor. The show must have had a different sound engineer as it was a long-running production. Conversely, the acoustic music was pleasant and well-integrated. There were likely various microphone techniques employed for this. Overall, I cannot endorse this acoustic event. I didn't pay to see costumes, but that's almost what I received for $200."
